The Happiest Nation In The World

Happiness can be very subjective. Some people are happy when it rains, others are happy when the sun is shining. In order to measure happiness social scientists take into account a number of different things such as average life expectancy and most importantly the people's answer to the following multiple choice question “How happy are you?”. While the United States may still be the richest nation on Earth, it can't claim to be as happy as Denmark.

The little country of Denmark, with only 5.5 million people, has most of its services free to the citizens. Wealth, natural beauty, quality education, low business startup costs, unrestricted civil freedoms and good health care are just some of the reasons why the Danes are the happiest people on Earth. But before you start thinking you were born in the wrong country and start packing your luggage for Denmark, bear in mind that on a small scale, what matters in the end is how happy YOU are.

Though this video dates back to 2008, Denmark still is the happiest nation in the world today. And if you've ever wondered why Danes are the happiest people out there, than this video might give you a few answers.

It's all about the amount of fish they eat making happy hormones! Plus apparantly they are heavy drinkers so that's gotta help with the happiness rating! LOL

I'm not Danish and I would prefer to live in the Meditteranean rather than in Denmark... but I admire the Danish system... With all those free services it's kind of easy to imagine Denmark as the happiest country on Earth.

I am an English woman living in Denmark and I can fully understand why the Danish are ranked the happiest people in the world. They have a wonderful system that entitles both Mothers and Fathers to stay home with their new born babies for up to 1 and a half years with pay. Child care is very good and it is perfectly exceptable to stay home from work if your child is sick. It's true they don't look like the happiest people on earth (they are generally shy, reserved folk but these are not bad points in my book) but when you get to know them you find a genuine kindness and true helpful friends. The winters may be long and dark but many of them join clubs and use winter activities/sports to help keep them physically fit and give them an endorphin kick during this time and I find snow much less depressing than dull, grey rainy winters in UK.
